El virus, así llamado en homenaje a dos de sus descubridores, infecta sólo a las células de las glándulas salivales y a un tipo de glóbulo blanco. La saliva es el único líquido corporal en que se ha comprobado la presencia de partículas infecciosas del virus. En las naciones menos desarrolladas, la infección con EBV se presenta en casi todos los niños antes de los cinco años de edad y no se acompaña de síntomas identificables. Cuando la infección se retrasa hasta la adolescencia o el comienzo de la adultez, el cuerpo responde por lo general en forma diferente, manifestándose la mononucleosis. Otros trastornos, más raros, también han sido asociados al virus, incluidos ciertos cánceres. No hay tratamientos específicos para ninguna de las formas de la infección por EBV, ni se han desarrollado vacunas.
